Donate Bone Marrow and Help Those in Need
There are thousands of patients with life threatening diseases like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancer who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation that severely compromises the immune system and destroys diseased bone marrow. It’s common to believe that these patients can rely on family members to donate marrow, but the truth is that over seventy percent of them do not have a relative that is a match. But you might be! So, join the 9 million others (including Desert Springs’ own CMA, Marci) who have registered to donate marrow and are taking strides to provide many people with a better chance at life. Here’s how to get started:
1. Register as a Donor
Registering is easy. You can either register online at www.BeTheMatch.org or, if you live in the United States, you can register at a Be The Match registry (click HERE to find a location near you). The online registration process takes about 10 minutes and the questions are similar to those asked when you give blood. Once you receive your kit, take a few minutes to swab the inside of your cheek, and send it off to get tested. Easy peasey!
2. Spread the Word and Contribute
Now that you’re registed, there is still more you can do to help. Donors are always needed, so educate your friends and family, hold a marrow drive, or donate monetarily to Be The Match.
Obviously, this cause is close to the heart of Desert Springs Cancer Care. Without bone marrow donations, many patients like those we see everyday wouldn’t get a second chance.
Questions about becoming a donor and what it might entail? Visit www.BeTheMatch.org or ask one of our DOCTORS.
Desert Springs Hosts Lily Oncology’s National “Oncology on Canvas” Art Exhibit
During the week of January 17, 2011, Desert Springs Cancer Care had the honor of hosting the national art exhibit, “Oncology on Canvas” sponsored by Lilly Oncology. This incredible exhibit consisted of 50 pieces from the 650 piece collection. Cancer survivors, caregivers and healthcare providers are all invited to contribute artwork to this contest every two years. Lilly Oncology then sets small exhibits up across the country in an effort to share these pieces with the public.
The national winner of this year’s competition happens to live here in Peoria, Arizona. DSCC invited the winner to attend the exhibit and Lilly Oncology provided refreshments for visitors. Easels were set up on countertops and down hallways to accommodate the art. Desert Springs looked like an art museum! Patients and their families were invited to browse the many pieces and enjoy the refreshments during the entire week the exhibit was on site.
On the first evening of the exhibit, we had the pleasure of listening to live music by the trio, “Music Serving the Word.” With Vicki on vocals, Dwight on bass and Chris on keyboard, the air was filled with the beautiful sounds of jazz. This lively trio provided a large repertoire of music and took requests from patients and guests. Art, music and food—it doesn’t get much better than that!
Different categories and media were used by the various artists to showcase their work. Some used watercolor while others used oil and photography. The national winner took a very unique approach to her presentation. Her entry consisted of two paintings of the same scene done in watercolor. The artist then cut each painting into strips and interwove them to recreate the scene. The result was stunning and earned her the top honors in three different categories: Best in Show, Cancer Survivor, and Healthcare Provider. Desert Springs Cancer Care congratulates the winner, not only for her extremely creative art, but for her incredible story of survival.
Lilly Oncology has sponsored this amazing art contest for several years now. An exhibition of past contest artwork and winners can be seen on their website. Over the years, the contest has grown in recognition and in number of entries. It is now nationally recognized as a premier art contest. Desert Springs Cancer Care thanks Lilly Oncology for making this incredible artwork available to our patients!
