There are thousands of patients with life threatening diseases like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancer who have undergone chemotherapy or radiation that severely compromises the immune system and destroys diseased bone marrow. It’s common to believe that these patients can rely on family members to donate marrow, but the truth is that over seventy percent of them do not have a relative that is a match. But you might be! So, join the 9 million others (including Desert Springs’ own CMA, Marci) who have registered to donate marrow and are taking strides to provide many people with a better chance at life. Here’s how to get started:

1. Register as a Donor

Registering is easy. You can either register online at www.BeTheMatch.org or, if you live in the United States, you can register at a Be The Match registry (click HERE to find a location near you). The online registration process takes about 10 minutes and the questions are similar to those asked when you give blood. Once you receive your kit, take a few minutes to swab the inside of your cheek, and send it off to get tested. Easy peasey!

Clipped from: www.marrow.org (share this clip)

2. Spread the Word and Contribute

Now that you’re registed, there is still more you can do to help. Donors are always needed, so educate your friends and family, hold a marrow drive, or donate monetarily to Be The Match.

Obviously, this cause is close to the heart of Desert Springs Cancer Care. Without bone marrow donations, many patients like those we see everyday wouldn’t get a second chance.

Questions about becoming a donor and what it might entail? Visit www.BeTheMatch.org or ask one of our DOCTORS.

This incredible exhibit consisted of 50 pieces from the 650 piece collection. Cancer survivors, caregivers and healthcare providers are all invited to contribute artwork to this contest every two years. Lilly Oncology then sets small exhibits up across the country in an effort to share these pieces with the public.

The national winner of this year’s competition happens to live here in Peoria, Arizona. DSCC invited the winner to attend the exhibit and Lilly Oncology provided refreshments for visitors. Easels were set up on countertops and down hallways to accommodate the art. Desert Springs looked like an art museum! Patients and their families were invited to browse the many pieces and enjoy the refreshments during the entire week the exhibit was on site.

On the first evening of the exhibit, we had the pleasure of listening to live music by the trio, “Music Serving the Word.” With Vicki on vocals, Dwight on bass and Chris on keyboard, the air was filled with the beautiful sounds of jazz. This lively trio provided a large repertoire of music and took requests from patients and guests. Art, music and food—it doesn’t get much better than that!

Different categories and media were used by the various artists to showcase their work. Some used watercolor while others used oil and photography. The national winner took a very unique approach to her presentation. Her entry consisted of two paintings of the same scene done in watercolor. The artist then cut each painting into strips and interwove them to recreate the scene. The result was stunning and earned her the top honors in three different categories: Best in Show, Cancer Survivor, and Healthcare Provider. Desert Springs Cancer Care congratulates the winner, not only for her extremely creative art, but for her incredible story of survival.

Lilly Oncology has sponsored this amazing art contest for several years now. An exhibition of past contest artwork and winners can be seen on their website. Over the years, the contest has grown in recognition and in number of entries. It is now nationally recognized as a premier art contest. Desert Springs Cancer Care thanks Lilly Oncology for making this incredible artwork available to our patients!

Desert Springs is happy to announce that one of our own patients has graciously started to conduct weekly support groups for our patients!

Being diagnosed with cancer is, undoubtedly, a different experience and one that is unique for each person. From the side effects of treatment to the way each person copes, the journey through diagnosis and onto remission is different for everyone. But, one thing that unites all people who experience cancer , be it the patient, family or friends, is the need to maintain a strong support system.

Meet Kathy Marcil, a courageous cancer survivor and long time patient of Desert Springs Cancer Care. Kathy has more than 30 years of experience as a licensed professional clinical and addiction counselor, a certified critical incident stress debriefer, a motivational speaker and life purpose coach for cancer patients and their families. Kathy often deals with relationships, crisis, and confidence issues, but her signature story revolves around surviving life’s unexpected moments.

In 2008, Kathy experienced one of life’s unexpected moment (just to add to her list of crazy experiences like being swept away in a monsoon flood!). She was diagnosed with breast cancer and metastasizes to the lymph-nodes. After seven surgeries, eight rounds of chemotherapy, two serious staph infections, being out of work for a year and a half, and suddenly having no income, Kathy is finally in remission and is conducting support groups for cancer patients and their families.

Read her story about the support groups she conducts here at Desert Springs:

My first cancer support group was conducted at Desert Springs Cancer Care a few weeks ago. This group is blessed with the most courageous patients and occasional family members. They support each other, laugh and cry together, sharing their strength, fears, and hopes with one another. They often call each other during the week to discuss what they are going through or to expand on what we have talked about that week. To hear a member of the group say, “now I don’t feel so alone,” really brings the struggle that cancer patients endure to the forefront and shows how important it is to maintain a strong support system. I even saw two husbands sharing phone numbers after group wanting to keep in touch.

This clinic, Dr. Buresh and the compassionate staff are responsible for my recovery. Desert Springs is a support system in itself! This clinic has such a soothing ambiance (a waterfall, cappuccino/hot chocolate/snack room) in a beautifully decorated setting. As the patients receive chemotherapy they can look at their own individual TV sitting in a comfy lounge chair. They may be serenaded by the live Trio (singer, keyboard, bass) or able to view the latest art show or work on the current puzzle or participate in a support group themselves or with family members. Walking in as a patient in recovery I felt as if I had come home!

No matter what kind of cancer you are diagnosed with, it’s important to understand that emotional support is just as important as the medical attention.

Kathy’s support group is held every Wednesday at 11:00am at Desert Springs.
